Farmhouse Il Bagolaro

The farmhouse IL BAGOLARO is located in Nerola in the heart of Sabina region.

The farm is 40 minutes far from Rome and it is surrounded by a sweep area of olive trees that is watched by a gigantic and ancient “bagolaro” (Bagolaro Celtis Australis which belongs to Ulmacee trees family, also called bagolaro and stone-breaker).

This multifunctional business farm was founded at the beginning of ’50s and it is run by a group of young farm businessmen who aimed by passion base their job on the country and the typical elements of Sabina region.

The business farm extends over 150 hectares producing mainly Sabina Dop olive oil. In our oil mill we carefully follow all the stages of production until the transformation, preserving the oil only under nitrogen.

Besides olive oil we produce also a good red grapes that gives us an excellent wine called Igt Lazio. Our sheep, pig and countryside farming allow us to victual the farm house since opening happened in 2003.

It is very important to mention the experience started in 2008 with the opening of a small laboratory within the farm where after a few years of work we make and store about 20 products between creams, patè, vegetables in olive oil, jams, flavoured oils, fruit in syrup and olive oil chocolate that today we produce in 5 different flavours.

The tree

Il bagolaro - the tree

The bagolaro is a big tree, very strong and long-lived. It can reach a height of 25 metres and grows spontaneously. It is typical of the Mediterranean and Western Asia. Possibly its name derives from the word “bagola”, a Northern Italy dialect term that means “handle” or “berry”, due to the use of its good wood for whips handles.

The bagolaro is highly resistant to various natural adversity and can grow fast enough. The trunk of this trees is not very high and has a much larger diameter at the base, when it is young has a light color and it looks smooth, as an adult is very full of veins, primary branches are large while secondary ones are almost always tilt and have a darker color.

The crown is roundish in shape, very thick and wide, usually birds use that as shelter.

The elm leaves are long and slightly asymmetrical, at the top are darker and have greater roughness. In autumn they become faded yellow and fall off after due to cold weather. The flowering period of the elm goes from April to May, its flowers are tiny and grow together in the shape of the bunch.

Fruits are yellow or light gray drupes and, when ripe, they become darker, have a sweet taste and for this reason most of birds are very greedy of them. The elm is primarily used for reforestation of rocky areas or land that are difficult to cultivate.

With bagolaro’s wood it is possible to build furniture, farming implements and it is great for work done with the lathe. It is also used as fuel. This tree grows easily in stony soils or in soils rich of limestone, it adapts itself particularly to cultivation like bonsai too.
